Post GenCon Report Part 2 – Games I Played

Sleep almost returned to full capacity, so lets see what I remember about the games I played in. I had tickets to five games:

Eschatology Code – The Strange (Cypher System)

My first Kickstarter game based on the same system as Numenera. The GM was new, but did an awesome job. I picked last for PCs, so ended up with the “face” character. His first name was just – L.G. Ballard I think – so I immediately adopted a southern accent and had him dress like Colonel Sanders. The game was a great intro to the system, and I got to distract panicking plane passengers with cat videos, and force one of the BBEGs to attack the other. I’m very excited to try this one out. One of the other folks in my group played the same game, and went about solving/defeating the module in an entirely different way. That is awesome GMing and module creation to allow that.

Treaty of Vanta – Wicked Fate

A wicked Fate game. Loved the setting and while I don’t normally want to create characters during a Con game it seems essential for Fate. The setting was good, but it depends so much on the players it was hard to tell. Our GM did a great job bringing us together and keeping things moving. Best part for me was learning more about Fate. Going to try and run a Supers game at home so this was vital.

Raid the Lightning – Nova Praxis (Savage Worlds)

Second Kickstarter game, and got to play with the Creator and it was run by a couple guys from one of my favorite pod casts – Roo Sack Gamers. For a two hour game, they did a good job of packing  as much detail into it as possible. I got to play a SIM – an uploaded sentience which in this game meant I was both the ship and a drone. Lots of things to keep track of, but still a lot of fun. Savage Worlds is a great system for con games. Looking forward to the full release of the game. Roo Sack Gamers has a two part pod cast of their play test, very informative to see how they put things together and how it changed for the con.

Tomb of Horrors Remix – Dungeon World

This was the most kick ass game that I have played at a convention – ever. As strange as it is to say, I was easily the most subdued player there. It took me a good hour to really get into the feeling and style of the GM (Sersa Victory from SVD Press – He kicks Ass!). But when I did, oh man, it just all opens up. I tried to play Tomb of horrors back in the day a long time ago for me – and failed miserably. Then a couple years ago it was in the book Ready Player One. The best part of the game was watching my friend Andre play. He started out real timid (more than me) and by the end of the game was taking it over with pure awesome. Playing in that game has changed the way I GM.

Supers vs Zombies (Hero System)

This was the only game that featured a common Nerd trope – the socially awkward. Dude just didn’t understand what was going on around him. Besides that, it was a pretty good end of con game. We played everyday, blue collar supers in the midst of a zombie outbreak. Our job was to get our group out of St Louis (topical) and out of danger. The battle started early, and we were dropping cars and clearing the path for a good three hours. The GM did a great job of keeping it light and making the Hero system move right along. Great game to end the con.

Overall a great year with Tomb of Horrors the stand out game by far. No GMs missed. No rail roads. After getting no games on Event Registration day this year was more than I could hope for.
