Post GenCon Report Part 1- My Games

Just back from GenCon, and slowly catching up on sleep. I’m going to break these updates into three parts. First is an update on the games that I ran. Second is games I played in. Third is everything else.

My games.

Overall I was very happy with how things went. All four games were well attended, with only one not having the max of six players (four instead). Two weeks prior to GenCon, I held a small “convention” – GrognardCon – where I was able to play test each of my adventures. I cannot stress enough how helpful play testing is for convention games.

Things learned during playtesting:

  • Damage from the Starship troopers PCs was too high – not enough tension.
  • While a Jawa scout is cool, having a slower speed than everyone else makes you less “scouty”.
  • The darkside powers need to happen to the PCs earlier in the game.
  • More bugs in the Starship troopers game, and more at once.
  • Increase the investigation and “scariness” of the game by adding a lab showing the operations on the skinnies.
  • Decrease the number of shots per weapon to increase tension.

General Review – Starship Troopers

The first run of the game was Thursday afternoon, and went very well. I was worried when a 10 year old girl decided to play the telepath, but she rocked it. All the other “adult” players were very encouraging and it was great. Changes to damage and armor worked pretty well, but the PCs were still a little over powered.

The second run of the game went even better, and lasted almost the entire slot. The character playing the telepath was almost the opposite of the previous ten year old, and the r/x rated notes to the brain bug were hilarious. Also, the person playing the leader really had a good time with the by the book hindrance.

General Review – Savage Star Wars

The first run on Thursday AM was not my best. The players got numerous jokers during initiative, so there was never any fear of having too few bennies. We also finished early which always makes me feel like I cheated the players. Besides that, they had a good time with the overall mystery and seemed to appreciate making midichlorians the “bad guy”.

The second run of the game went a lot better. Tremendous interplay between the death wish jawa and the heroic/loyal leader. They also had a good time with the mystery. I eliminated the darkside powers in this one, it just seemed to complicate things too much.

I am attaching zip files of the (near) final sets of PCs and the form if anyone is interested.
