GenCon 2015 Review Day 2

For my Day 0 and 1 review see Here.

Friday was another day full of GMing.

First up at 8AM was Savage Worlds, Rise of the New Gods again. Didn’t start well with only one player showing up. However, as all things GenCon, I was rescued by a group with generic tickets. They were actually looking for a Pathfinder game run by another member of PoO (Party of One – the “Premier” gaming group I run with (really just three GMs from my home group, but GenCon blesses us with that distinction)), but since it was full I got to teach them Savage Worlds. Once again they got into the characters pretty well, and since they were not familiar with powers we just winged a lot of it. I think they really liked the exploding dice and bennies, something that really makes Savage Worlds a great con game system.

That was it for my own games and after a break for lunch I co-GMd a 5e game with another PoO GM from my home group. The game was “competitive” with the players divided into two teams solving problems. At the end of the game it’s a free for all with some cooperation thrown in for fun. An entire group had bought all the tickets, and they seemed very excited to play. When we showed up, they had already taken over the table – all in matching shirts – 8 guys and 1 girl in BSG shirts that had the saying “So Gay We All”. We had an entire table of Gaymers and it was awesome. They dove into the role playing and the roll playing equally. Conflicts established during the beginning of the game escalated at the end, and everyone played the hell out their motivations. Talking about it later, Barb (the main GM) and I think that we had some repeat players from the last time she ran the game, which I think just shows what a cool game she made.

My last game of the night canceled (it was canceled the week before – got an email from GenCon ahead of time) and since I hadn’t really found anything I wanted to play, I got tickets for the Concert Against Humanity. I’d seen Paul and Storm before and really wanted to see The Doubleclicks. All the other performers were gravy on top of a total geek out evening. First the bad. I had to walk over a mile to get there, and coming back had to walk through the One Direction concert attendees heading home – nightmare. Everything else was good. John Scalzi and Patrick Rothfuss were excellent. Really enjoyed the Super Villain skit. Starting the show by answering their customer emails with audience participation was a brilliant move by the CAH folks.

Happy and tired (default GenCon status) I walked home through groups of teenage girls ready for Saturday.
