With the current campaign coming to an end, of course thoughts turn to what’s next. I’ve wanted to run a superhero campaign for awhile and with my Star Wars needs mostly being met by another campaign, now is the time.
So what’s the best way to start a new campaign?
Since I didn’t really feel I had a lot of player buy in to the last campaign that is job one. And to feed my need to try something new a new (another!) system is job two. With a little luck, perhaps they help each other.
First the system. I’m going to use Fate Core. It has a couple different superhero settings and is fairly simple. It is also available as pay what you want. So it is easy to learn (my opinion) and inexpensive to get – bonus.
Fate also relies on a cooperative player and GM creation process. Everyone sits down together and cooperatively comes up with ideas and situations about the world. I know that this may go over like a lead balloon with some players, but might involve others in the world at least a little more.
My basic ideas:
- PCs are Superheros – heroic
- Unknowns
- Are they established
- How do they know each other
- The city they are in is not a nice place
- Unknowns
- How are they related to the city – jobs, family, history
- What other groups are in the city
What are they fighting for or against?
Character and shared world creation should not take the entire night. So a brief confrontation to familiarize folks with rules is probably a good idea.
Another GM is running for at least two weeks, so have a bit of time to prepare.
