GenCon 2015 Review Day 0 and 1

This year was another good GenCon. I ran a lot of games – a lot of games.

Arriving on Wednesday afternoon, had some time to wander and see what was new and what had moved. New Restaurant this year is Tavern on South. Excellent food, service and beer selection. At least on Wed it had not been found by the crowds. We stayed st the JW Marriott and had excellent service. It is so nice to stay in the same hotel where your games are run.

Even though the line was long, we were able to get through Will Call (those that needed it), and purchase shirts from the GenCon store.

For the first time this year, I ran some DnD Adventurers League. This meant going to a meeting and checking in with Bald Man Games. Great experience (see the Day four report for more). Only downside was no AC in the convention center. Use your imagination on that one.

Thursday was busy as always. My 8AM game was Rise of the New Gods – Savage Worlds Supers, it was a cross between The Avengers and Friends. As an experiment I limited it to four players. I think this worked well There was more player interaction and more opportunities for individual PCs to shine. Everyone was fairly familiar with Savage Worlds so was able to jump right in to the story.

Noon game was Dungeons Incorporated – DnD 5e, your group makes dungeons for the BBEGs and a Lich wants some PCs removed. Everyone was very familiar with the system, and it had more tactics than roleplaying, but fun was had by all.

Once again the LEGO terrain was a hit, especially in the Supers game. All the credit goes to my two sons on this one.

My last game of the night was my first chance to play! I played in Mastodon – The Strange system by Monte Cook Games. The group was a little non-functional at the start, but everyone got into their roles after a bit of fumbling with the initial battle. The translation to Rok brought everything home, and made it feel – well – Strange. I went all-in on the Kickstarter (all the electronic versions) and now want to get the hardcover of the basic book.

Look for GenCon Day 2 soon – all about the Concert Against Humanity and Gaymers – so awesome.
